Journaling Prompts

Intention: One definition for purpose is intention. How do you participate in creating your future by setting intentions? Do you think your life is haphazard or guided by decisions that you make? Are there methods you use to focus your plans – are you a list maker, a planner, a dreamer? Or do you prefer to let the wind and waves of life carry you? Do you feel different about this question in different areas of your life?

Meaning: Do you know what your purpose is? Does your work, your family life, your avocation give you a sense of meaning and value? What parts of your life aren’t working, and what could you do to change that? Do you believe that there’s a purpose for your life that was decided for you by a greater force, or do you determine your own meaning? Is there such a thing as ‘mattering’? How would you know if you did matter?

Resolved: How do you know when you’ve made a decision you can live with? Do you prefer to keep things flexible until it’s totally necessary to settle on one thing or another, or are you quick to make your decisions and move on? Has someone in your life ever made a decision that has impacted you in a major way, for better or for worse, and what was your response?

Tenacity: Are you like a dog with a bone in any part of your life? What have you accomplished by being tenacious? Do you wish you were more tenacious in some regard? Who in your life is truly tenacious, and what have you learned from their example? Can you ever be too tenacious – too tied to an outcome and its implementation by your efforts?

Goals: What are your main goals? Are they equally distributed between the personal and professional areas of your life? What have you accomplished in the last year, and what do you hope to accomplish this coming year? Do you share your goals with people in your life, or do you keep them to yourself – are you ever afraid that letting them be known will diminish your chances of fulfilling them?

Design Team Call

Scrapbooking from the Inside Out is a monthly kit club, inspiration source and online community. We are holding a Design Team search. Inside Out is a different kind of kit club – it’s about a form of what we call ‘Scrapbook Therapy’ – using scrapbooking as a form of self-exploration, self-expression and self-discovery. Our goal is to encourage the use of scrapbooking as a way for us to tap into our deep inner worlds in the midst of our very busy lives. We will be taking submissions from now through November 24, 2010.

We are seeking talented designers, who are passionate about scrapbooking and personal growth to share in this journey, to add to our team. As a Design Team member, you will serve a critical role in promoting the kits and the website on message boards, the blog, and representing the company where ever you can. We ask that our designers not hold design team positions with any other kit club or online scrapbooking retailer. Manufacturer design team appointments and teaching at your LSS are fine.

As a member of our Design Team, you will be asked to:
1. create 5 layouts using 80% materials from our kit and relating to the theme of the month
2. contribute two monthly articles for subscriber-only content (tips or techniques with step by step photos )
3. participate on our message boards at least 4 days per week
4. design for Inside Out for a 6-month term, beginning on December 1, 2010 (starting with the January 2011 Kit)
5. post your Inside Out LOs as requested by us at scrapbook community sites
6. submit your LOs for publication as requested

All projects made with the kit are yours to keep, and when used in the newsletter or on the website, you will be given full credit. As our designer, you can also submit your own work for publication after 1 month of debut of the kit, as long as you give Inside Out proper credit.

Your compensation will be:
1. Free monthly kit with no shipping charge from January-June 2011.
2. Admission to CHA-Winter in Los Angeles, CA, Jan 29 - Feb 1, 2011 (travel, hotel and other expenses not covered).
3. Recognition on our website with a link to your blog.
4. Incredible friendships, publishing opportunities and creative insight into your heart!

To apply, please email the following to scrapbookdesign@aol.com (subject – Design Team):
1. photos of 4 layouts of any size. All 4 projects should be about your inner world – your thoughts, feelings, dreams, fears
2. links to your online gallery, blog and/or resume, if available
3. your full contact information: name, phone number, email address, and mailing address
4. a short paragraph or two about why you want to be one of our designers – why this concept matters to you
5. a list of your current scrapbooking commitments – other DT work, etc.

We’re a passionate and creative team looking for like-minded people who love to share their thoughts and feelings using our craft and foster a supportive and welcoming community. We look forward to getting to know you!

Layout Inspiration and Your Purpose

Here are the fourth and fifth challenges for this month's kit, PURPOSE. Challenge yourself to create a LO about your purpose. Need more free inspiration? Come to our monthly INSPIRATION PAGE for music, stock photos, quotations and more!

October Challenge #4, Decision/Time

Resolved: How do you know when you’ve made a decision you can live with? Do you prefer to keep things flexible until it’s totally necessary to settle on one thing or another, or are you quick to make your decisions and move on? Has someone in your life ever made a decision that has impacted you in a major way, for better or for worse, and what was your response?

Please create a LO about an important decision you or someone else made that has/is impacted/impacting you.

For the design twist, please use a time image - like the calendar pcs on the crate paper, or a clock...or something else entirely!

October Challenge #5, Goals/Words

Goals: What are your main goals? Are they equally distributed between the personal and professional areas of your life? What have you accomplished in the last year, and what do you hope to accomplish this coming year? Do you share your goals with people in your life, or do you keep them to yourself – are you ever afraid that letting them be known will diminish your chances of fulfilling them?

How do you feel about what you've accomplished this year? What do you wish to accomplish next year? Tell us.

For the design twist, use words in a stylized way - using the font or size or position in your design choice. Are your goals small or large? Are they in your grasp or floating in the clouds?

Use Masks to Create Custom Backgrounds

Hi, Ladies! Nancy Doren here guest blogging at SFTIO today to show you how to create a masked background that looks like you spent hours on it... in minutes!

This month's kit contains the super-useful gears masks from Tim Holtz.

Gather your supplies: Cardstock, masks, spray paints (this photo shows a Glimmer Mist spray in addition to my gold spray paint, but I actually ended up using another green spray paint. You can use any kind of spray ink for this project: Glimmer Mists, Shimmerz, plain old spray paint)

Place your masks on one side of the cardstock.

Lightly spray over them with gold spray paint (if I did this tutorial again, I would use the dark paint first; the lighter paint second. Live and learn!).

Let the cardstock dry for a few seconds, then peel up the masks. Place them back down in an overlapping fashion on the other side of the cardstock.

Spray again with the gold spray.

Remove the masks again, and place a few of them overlapping the first masked gears.

Spray with a second color of paint. You want this layer to be very faint, so hold the spray ink at least 12 inches back from your cardstock, so you get a very fine mist.

Now you have a double masked background! I love how layered it looks:

Now you can create on top of your custom cardstock!

P.S.: A word on cleaning your masks: When I first used a Tim Holtz mask last year, I made the mistake of washing it with water... now it's no longer sticky! I find it's better to just let whatever paint is on them to air dry, then stick them back down onto their adhesive sheet. If the ink won't dry, carefully wipe it off the top of the mask with a tissue. Your masks will stay sticky for a long time if you take care of them!

Have fun with those masks you've been wondering about!

Nancy

Who in your life is truly tenacious, and what have you learned from their example? Can you ever be too tenacious – too tied to an outcome and its implementation by your efforts?

Never let your persistence and passion turn into stubbornness and ignorance. Anthony J. D'Angelo

Another Chance to Win? Yes! And Intention.

Check us out on Cathy Zielske's blog today here.

We've got our second PURPOSE layout challenge up on the message board too - here it is (and you can play along, kit or not!). Our challenges make you really think and dig deep to use symbolism along with your photos and journaling to tell a richer story about YOU:

October Challenge #2, Intention/Focal Point

Intention: One definition for purpose is intention. How do you participate in creating your future by setting intentions? Do you think your life is haphazard or guided by decisions that you make? Are there methods you use to focus your plans – are you a list maker, a planner, a dreamer? Or do you prefer to let the wind and waves of life carry you? Do you feel different about this question in different areas of your life?

The universe may have a purpose, but nothing we know suggests that, if so, this purpose has any similarity to ours. Bertrand Russell

I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions. Augusten Burroughs

For challenge #2 please create a LO about setting intentions. Does it work?

For the design twist, please pick a unique focal point for your layout.

Here are some great DT layouts featuring the concept of INTENTION.

So tell me...do you set intentions?

I am a long-time list-maker. One of the things I like to do is make lists of not just the 'to-do' of day to day life, but my long term goals as well. For me, there's something about having them down on paper that makes them more real. It's like having a star to guide you - if you see what you want to create, it's easier to create it - not by magic, but by intentionally shifting back when you're off your path.

What parts of your life aren’t working, and what could you do to change that? Do you believe that there’s a purpose for your life that was decided for you by a greater force, or do you determine your own meaning? Is there such a thing as ‘mattering’? How would you know if you did matter?

Learn Even More About Expressing Emotion on Paper

I'm excited to share a wonderful resource with you all! The very talented Marit Barentsen and Michelle LaPoint Rydell have a new workshop coming up that will be of great interest to our loyal SFTIO members.

Click HERE to go to Marit's great website, Marit's Paper World to learn more and sign up for this workshop.

Here's the detailed description of the class - it's a way to practice expanding your creative and expressive world with new techniques, innovative methods and more opportunities to say who you really are...

Marit's work is fantastic and she is a sweetheart! Make sure to check out her site and see all she has to offer. It's wonderful to find kindred spirits like Marit...dedicated to art and the exploration of the soul...

This workshop starts October 22!
(12 lessons over 6 weeks; posted on Tuesdays and Fridays)

You will create a minimum of 10 art journal pages together with a matching folder to store your work.

Teachers: Marit Barentsen & Michelle LaPoint Rydell

Art journaling focuses on putting your personal thoughts and emotions on paper and you don’t always have to use words to do that! Even if you're not a writer you can create meaningful art journal pages because an emotion can be expressed through a photograph, a color, a material or a particular technique. In this workshop we will explore one specific emotion each lesson, and take that emotion as the basis to create a personal art journal page. What does each specific emotion mean to you? You are encouraged to explore your inner world and your perception of your emotions and turn them into art journal pages. Each lesson also explains a different technique, step-by-step, through photos or an instructional video.
The techniques are consistent with the emotion.

Techniques include gel medium photo transfer, paper weaving, writing meaningful journaling, using paint on the page etc. Inspiration videos stuffed with art, layouts, quotes and music will help to get the ideas flowing and set the creative process in motion. The lessons also contain printable collage sheets with photos, quotes and images for you to use in your work. You are challenged to explore your inner self and take a step further in your creativity. This is your opportunity to learn new approaches to self-expression. Do you dare to explore your emotions?

“Mixed Emotions” includes:

* 12 lessons with assignments in pdf format. Each lesson will focus on a specific emotion and an art technique that goes with it. Techniques will be clearly shown through photos or demonstrated on video. Both beginners and advanced art journalers will find pleasure in working with the lessons.

* Access to inspirational videos to inspire you and help your creative juices flow.

* Extra printable collage sheets with photos, illustrations and quotes to use in your work.

* Access to a private group discussion forum where you may share, ask questions and interact with the teacher and other class participants.(Access will be activated a few days before the workshop starts or within 24 hours of payment.)

* Access to group albums for posting your completed assignments and seeing what others have done. (Access will be activated a few days before the workshop starts or within 24 hours of payment.)
