Journaling Prompts

Approval: Are you a person who seeks the approval of others, or are you immune to the opinions of the people around you? Can you recall a time when you were desperate for someone’s approval? To what lengths would you go to get the approval you seek? Have your experiences with seeking approval been related to a parent, a spouse or a friend?

Without Question: What do you accept on faith? What circumstances or experiences have created your most deeply-held beliefs? Are there friends or other loved ones that you trust without reservation? Is there anything someone you love could do to lose your formerly unconditional acceptance?

Resistance: What do you choose not to accept about yourself? Can you identify areas in your life where you can see what you want to change but can’t seem to actually get to making changes? What in your past or your personality makes you resistant in those areas? Is there fear or anger behind those choices?

Giving In: What have you experienced that has forced you to give in to life’s twists and turns? Have you faced circumstances outside yourself that have challenged you to accept things that have caused you pain? What methods have your brain, heart and body used to not give in to things you didn’t want to believe? Have you experienced any relief after letting go and accepting what was previously unacceptable?

Agree or Agree to Disagree: How do you handle disagreement? Does it differ based on whom you are facing? Have you found ways over the years to disagree more agreeably? Do you ever feel guilty or pressured when you find yourself disagreeing over something important? Are you fast to work things out to make life feel smoother, or are you comfortable disagreeing over critical life issues?

Quotes

You have to know how to accept rejection and reject acceptance. Ray Bradbury

Acceptance without proof is the fundamental characteristic of Western religion, rejection without proof is the fundamental characteristic of Western science. Gary Zukav

Of course there is no formula for success except perhaps an unconditional acceptance of life and what it brings. Arthur Rubinstein

Living apart and at peace with myself, I came to realize more vividly the meaning of the doctrine of acceptance. To refrain from giving advice, to refrain from meddling in the affairs of others, to refrain, even though the motives be the highest, from tampering with another's way of life - so simple, yet so difficult for an active spirit. Hands off! Henry Miller

If our early lessons of acceptance were as successful as our early lessons of anger, how much happier we would all be. Peter McWilliams

Acceptance is such an important commodity, some have called it "the first law of personal growth." Peter McWilliams

Acceptance is not a state of passivity or inaction. I am not saying you can't change the world, right wrongs, or replace evil with good. Acceptance is, in fact, the first step to successful action. If you don't fully accept a situation precisely the way it is, you will have difficulty changing it. Moreover, if you don't fully accept the situation, you will never really know if the situation should be changed. Peter McWilliams

I define comfort as self-acceptance. When we finally learn that self-care begins and ends with ourselves, we no longer demand sustenance and happiness from others. Jennifer Louden

Acceptance is not submission; it is acknowledgment of the facts of a situation. Then deciding what you're going to do about it. Kathleen Casey Theisen

Passive acceptance of the teacher's wisdom is easy to most boys and girls. It involves no effort of independent thought, and seems rational because the teacher knows more than his pupils; it is moreover the way to win the favour of the teacher unless he is a very exceptional man. Yet the habit of passive acceptance is a disastrous one in later life. It causes man to seek and to accept a leader, and to accept as a leader whoever is established in that position. Bertrand Russell

Honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress. Mahatma Gandhi

The man who in view of gain thinks of righteousness; who in the view of danger is prepared to give up his life; and who does not forget an old agreement however far back it extends - such a man may be reckoned a complete man. Confucius

The goal of life is living in agreement with nature. Zeno

Men keep agreements when it is to the advantage of neither to break them. Solon

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. Aristotle

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident. Arthur Schopenhauer

That which has always been accepted by everyone, everywhere, is almost certain to be false. Paul Valery

Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric. Bertrand Russell

I do not confer praise or blame: I accept. I am the measure of all things. I am the centre of the world. W. Somerset Maugham

Nature is just enough; but men and women must comprehend and accept her suggestions. Antoinette Brown Blackwell

Assert your right to make a few mistakes. If people can't accept your imperfections, that's their fault. Dr. David M. Burns

Work and struggle and never accept an evil that you can change. Andre Gide

The first precept was never to accept a thing as true until I knew it as such without a single doubt. Rene Descartes

It's a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it. W. Somerset Maugham

Character - the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life - is the source from which self respect springs. Joan Didion

We must accept that this creative pulse within us is God's creative pulse itself. Joseph Chilton Pearce

The courage to be is the courage to accept oneself, in spite of being unacceptable. Paul Tillich

Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate. Chuang-tzu

One must also accept that one has 'uncreative' moments. The more honestly one can accept that, the quicker these moments will pass. Etty Hillesum

We secure our friends not by accepting favors but by doing them. Thucydides

God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other. Reinhold Niebuhr

We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. Carl Jung

Be not astonished at new ideas; for it is well known to you that a thing does not therefore cease to be true because it is not accepted by many. Spinoza

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. The Buddha

Without accepting the fact that everything changes, we cannot find perfect composure. But unfortunately, although it is true, it is difficult for us to accept it. Because we cannot accept the truth of transience, we suffer. Shunryu Suzuki

Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate, or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such. Henry Miller

I do not care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members. Groucho Marx

I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives. Leo Tolstoy

Rebellion against your handicaps gets you nowhere. Self-pity gets you nowhere. One must have the adventurous daring to accept oneself as a bundle of possibilities and undertake the most interesting game in the world - making the most of one's best. Harry Emerson Fosdick
