Journaling Prompts:

The Comfort of Love: Nothing could be more comforting than knowing that you are loved. You know it when you see it - the look in the eye of the one you love when you know that your love is returned in kind…there’s something about that sense of ‘meeting’ that is so powerful and soothing. Who makes you feel safe? Who in your life gives you that feeling? Do you remember the first time you felt it? How do you hold that moment in your life today?

Security Objects: As children, many of us had something that gave us comfort as we maneuvered our way into the world around us. A special blanket, a bottle or pacifier, a stuffed toy…do you remember your security object? Do you still have it? If so, do you tell anyone about it, or do you keep it a secret? If you were forced to give it up, can you recall that feeling? Were you angry or hurt? Today, do you carry anything with you, wear, or keep a special item, totem or symbol that gives you comfort?

A Secure Base: Psychologists believe that the relationship between an infant and her primary caregiver is what can create a secure sense of self for a child that she can carry into life as an adult. Did you grow up with an internal sense of comfort and safety? Do you feel that internal sense of comfort as you walk around the world? If so, can you remember moments as a child when you felt protected? Do you have those moments today? If you don’t feel that intrinsic comfort, what thoughts and feelings does that bring up for you? What do you think would bring you that comfort today?

Creature Comforts: Some of the best comforts in life are simple ones - a pair of cozy socks, a good book and a mug of hot chocolate…and we ALL have comfort foods that we turn to (sometimes to excess) when we need a sense of comfort. What do you crave? What simple pleasures bring you peace when things seem crazy all around you? What physical items fill your senses? What might you indulge in too much and what are you missing when you turn to those things?
